Romina Barrientos is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who is passionate about helping families and children thrive. Born and raised in Guatemala, she speaks both English and Spanish fluently. Romina has been trained extensively in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, and filial therapy. For the last seven years, she has worked in community agencies and at local schools, providing individual and group therapy to children, teens, and parents/caregivers. As a dance instructor and published writer, Romina also implements movement, somatic exercises, journaling, and other creative arts to assist her clients in the therapeutic process.
Romina's ideal clients are:
In a safe place, surrounded by toys-Sessions begin with a simple direction: "You can do anything you want-and I will let you know if you cannot do something." Unstructured sessions allow children to learn and explore their own feelings and thoughts without any judgment or expectations.
During filial therapy sessions, parents/guardians learn play therapy skills they can use to increase positive interactions with their kids.Children often benefit from this modality since it increases trust and safety in the paren-child relationship.
Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the tools Romina uses to help children/teens process painful traumatic events- (this modality is structured and used after a thorough assessment). TF-CBT also helps children and teens manage trauma-related symptoms.
Motivational interviewing encourages clients to engage in positive behaviors to reach their goals. With MI, Romina asks thoughtful questions and prompts to encourage clients to identify attainable goals and problematic behaviors getting in the way of goal completion.
Research has shown that mindfulness is an effective way to treat a variety of emotional and behavioral concerns. By teaching clients grounding techniques, clients are able to increase awareness of their own emotions and thoughts and decrease criticism and judgement.
With clients who are open, Romina may utilize somatic exercises, dance, and movement as a way to build rapport and trust with teens and children.
Dance and movement also helps clients connect their minds and bodies to the present moment.
